The 2022 women’s Asia Cup witnessed its biggest upset so far on Thursday (6) when Thailand stunned two-time runners-up Pakistan by four wickets in a crucial league match in Sylhet, Bangladesh.

Natthakan Chantham’s 51-ball 61 powered the Southeast Asian nation to a memorable win as it overhauled the target of 117 runs in 20 overs that Pakistan had put before them. Thailand required 10 off six deliveries and eight off five when Rosenan Kanoh hit Diana Baig for a boundary. Nattaya Boochatham eventually got Thailand over the line with a single off the last ball which saw her team beginning wild celebrations.

This was Thailand’s first win of the tournament and they are now placed fifth in the points table with two from three games. Pakistan had won both their games before the shock defeat and are at No.2 after arch-rivals India who have won all their three matches so far.

“Very excited. Pakistan are a strong side. We want to beat every team, but at the moment, we just enjoyed our fielding and batting. I want my team to have fun, and the win comes automatically,” Thailand captain Naruemol Chaiwai said after the game.

Earlier, Pakistan won the toss and elected to bat but could put on a modest total of 116 runs for the loss of five wickets.

Sidra Ameen was their top scorer with 56 off 64. Sornnarin Tippoch was the pick of the Thailand bowlers with two wickets for 20.

Thailand next take on the United Arab Emirates on Friday (7). Pakistan also play their next game the same day as they take on India in a big clash.
