Police in India have launched a probe after a viral video showed men entering a women’s college in Delhi, the national capital, by scaling the institute’s walls.
The cops came into the picture following a horrific incident during an event on October 14 which was organised by students of the 74-year-old Miranda House College for the upcoming Diwali festival.
A student who took the video alleged that the men entered the college premises and engaged in objectionable activities such as “cat-calling, groping, sexist sloganeering, and more”, the BBC reported.
The Delhi Police registered a case against “unknown students”.
Men climbing over the walls to get into Miranda House during an open fest. What followed was horrible. Cat-calling, groping, sexist sloganeering and more. Men entering safe spaces to harass gender minorities is nothing new, but they out do themselves every time. pic.twitter.com/UkMAuJZKVU

Other videos related to the incident also went viral on social media that showed men scaling a gate in the presence of a security official and chanting slogans inside the campus.
The incident led to a massive outrage on social media.
The Delhi Commission for Women stepped in with its chairperson Swati Maliwal saying she has written separately to the deputy commissioner of the city police and the principal of the college. In the letters, she has put before them a number of questions, including the details of the police case, and security arrangements that were made for the event, the report added.
The principal of the college told the Indian Express newspaper that though the event is an annual affair, it was “never very big”.
There were “precautions and… police personnel” but “no one had anticipated or prepared for such a large number of students”, she said.
She also said that the college would file a separate case after checking the CCTV footage and the administration was “having several discussions now” to ensure that such incidents do not happen in future.
Miranda House is located on the north campus of the prestigious Delhi University.
This is, however, not the first time that such an incident has happened at the university over which protests started.
In 2020, students of Gargi College said that dozens of men had forcibly entered their campus during their annual festival and “molested” students. Ten arrests were made in that incident.
In 2007, hundreds of students protested after some women from Indraprastha College were sexually harassed near the campus by a mob.
