WIPRO executive chairman Rishad Premji has stressed on the importance of work-life balance and said it was crucial for the well-being of employees.
While taking part at a session on Building Legacy Through Purpose during the Bengaluru Tech Summit 2024 on Tuesday, Premji said work-life is something that employees have to define for themselves and draw the boundaries. “Organisations are never going to work at it for you,” he added.
Premji’s comments come at a time when Infosys co-founder NR Narayana Murthy had sparked a social media debate by saying he does not believe in work-life balance.
At an event organised by a TV channel in Mumbai recently, 78-year-old Murthy also claimed he was disappointed when Infosys shifted to a five-day week in 1986.
He also reiterated his remark advocating a 70-hour work week. “I think in this country, we have to work very hard because there is no substitute for hard work. Even if you are the most intelligent guy, you need to work hard. So therefore, I am sorry, I have not changed my view,” Murthy said
Premji said the definition of work-life has also evolved over the years.
While earlier it meant hours spent at the office, now it could also mean not restricting access to social media platforms while at work, he added.
Premji also advised young entrepreneurs to focus on building organisations with the right values.
He felt artificial intelligence is a disruptive force and some jobs may disappear.
