A group of senior executives of Tesla Inc. is set to visit India this week to meet government officials in a fresh bid to deepen the auto major’s supply chain in the South Asian nation as an effort to diversify beyond China, Bloomberg reported.
The executives are scheduled to meet officials, including those from the office of prime minister Narendra Modi, to speak over local sourcing of components for Tesla’s models, the report said citing informed sources that spoke on the condition of anonymity.
According to the Bloomberg report, the Tesla officials’ visit could see a “thaw in the relationship” of the company and India where the former is yet to enter in a meaningful manner. While Tesla chief Elon Musk has in the past criticised India’s high import taxes and its electric vehicle policies, India advised the US company not to sell cars that have been made in China on its soil.
The report added that the visiting team would feature C-suite executives and managers from Tesla’s supply chain from Austin, Texas, and business development officials.
The executives are also likely to reiterate the automaker’s request for the South Asian nation to slash import taxes on its vehicles, the sources added.
Bloomberg didn’t get any immediate remark from either Tesla or India’s ministry of road transport and highways after contacting them.
