Why July 1 is celebrated as Doctor’s Day in India

It marks the birth anniversary of Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy, a renowned physician who served as the second chief minister of the eastern state of West Bengal between 1948 and 1962, when he died.

JULY 1 is observed as the National Doctor’s Day in India every year. On this day, doctors all across are honoured for their contributions and dedications towards the society’s well-being.

The date July 1 is picked to celebrate the doctors’ contributions as it marks the birth anniversary of Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy (1882-1962), a renowned physician who served as the second chief minister of the eastern state of West Bengal between 1948 and 1962, when he died. Incidentally, he also passed away on July 1 — on his 80th birth anniversary.

Dr Roy was also a statesman and educationist who is referred to as the architect of Bengal. He had played a big role in the development of medical education and healthcare services in India. In 1961, Dr Roy was conferred Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, for his contributions to the medical sector. He belonged to the Indian National Congress.

Events and activities are held on the occasion of National Doctor’s Day across India to honour physicians. Seminars, conferences and public lectures are organised at medical organisations and hospitals on healthcare-related topics and medical progress.
