CRICKETING rivalry between India and Bangladesh hit the nadir on Sunday (23) after Harmanpree Kaur, captain of the visiting team, publicly slammed the officials over the standard of umpiring in the third and final one-day international (ODI) between the two teams which ended in a tie and the series ended 1-1.

Chasing 226 to win, the visitors were all out for 225 in 49.3 overs. All the games of the series were played at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur.

Kaur, who had earlier smashed the stumps with her bat over the umpire’s decision to dismiss her on the score of 14, targeted the officials during the presentation ceremony. She was also accused of disrespecting her Bangladesh counterpart Nigar Sultana Joty and the home team by inviting the umpires for the post-series photograph.

A video went viral on social media where the India women’s team captain seemed to be asking someone to join the series-end photoshoot involving the two teams. The situation became so much worse that Sultana walked out of the joint photo-session with the trophy with her team.

Speaking at a press conference later, the Bangladesh captain said, “I can’t tell you what happened, but it didn’t feel right to be there [for the photograph] with my team. It wasn’t the right environment. That’s why we went back. Cricket is a game of discipline and respect.”

India vice captain Smriti Mandhana later told the media that the India captain did not disrespect the opponents but only said a few words against the umpires officiating in the game.

“I don’t think she said anything towards the Bangladesh captain. From whatever I heard, think talked a bit about umpiring. I don’t think she said anything about them (the Bangladesh players).

“We should not talk about things which did not happen during the match. In the post-match things were not on camera, that is something which happened after the post-match presentation, so let’s not talk about it,” Mandhana said.

It was reported by ESPNcricinfo that Kaur shouted “bring the umpires also” during the photoshoot, accusing the home team officials of being biased.

India levelled the ODI series by thumping Bangladesh in the second match by 108 runs after losing the first by 40 runs in DLS method.

Earlier, they beat the hosts 2-1 in a three-match T20 series.
