AT a time when the prime ministerial race for the UK has seen nations such as China and Russia becoming a part of it and Rishi Sunak, one of the contenders calling Beijing the UK’s “largest threat”, Russian ambassador to London Andrey Kelin said during a Rossiya-24 TV broadcast on Wednesday (27) that Moscow remains Britain’s number one threat, Russia’s state-run TASS news agency reported.
“They still have Russia in first place, and they are doing everything to show that Russia is the number one threat at the moment,” he said.
Kelin, who recently slammed British foreign secretary Liz Truss, who is contesting against Sunak to become the next British prime minister, saying she never listens to arguments, said the UK doesn’t only supply weapons to Ukraine but also trains the Ukrainian military on its territory.
“And they do it on several grounds: in the north, in the center, in the south of Britain. <…> But all this is quite serious, I must say, it shows that Ukraine is really being turned into a NATO forward base,” Kelin noted.
China hit back at the British prime ministerial candidates Sunak and Truss more than once this week after it featured in the race for 10 Downing in a negative way. The Chinese foreign ministry and media said the British politicians found a punching bag in China since they were unable to cover their own internal mess.
