Cyrus Mistry, former chairman of India’s Tata Group, was killed in a road accident near Mumbai on Sunday (4) when his Mercedes rammed into a road divider in Palghar district of the western state of Maharashtra.

He was 54.

Who was Cyrus Mistry

Cyrus Pallonji Mistry was an Indian-born Irish businessman who served as the sixth chairman of the Tata Group and only the second to not bear the surname Tata after Norwoji Saklatwala. He owned 18.4 per cent stake in Tata Sons through his company Cyrus Investments, according to Forbes India.

Mistry was the younger son of Pallonji Mistry, chairman of the Shapoorji Pallonji Group who had a major stake in Tata Sons who passed away in June.

Mistry replaced Ratan Tata as the chairman of the Tata Group after the latter stepped down on turning 75. He had joined the board of Tata Sons in 2006 and held earlier a number of non-executive positions on boards of several other Tata companies. But he could retain the post for only four years.

In October 2016, Mistry was removed as the chairman of Tata Sons in a dramatic manner.

In December 2016, two Mistry-backed investment firms — Cyrus Investments Pvt Ltd and Sterling Investments Corporation Pvt Ltd — had moved the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal after alleging mismanagement by Tata Sons, NDTV reported.

Mistry was removed as a director on the board of Tata Sons, the holding company of Tata Group firms, in February 2017.

The late businessman was the managing director of Shapoorji Pallonji Group before his appointment as the chairman-designate of Tata Sons.

Mistry did his graduation in civil engineering from the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, London. He also had a Master’s degree in management from the London Business School.

Mistry is married to Rohika Chagla, daughter of lawyer Iqbal Chagla, and the duo have two sons — Firoz Mistry and Zahan Mistry.

He was an avid golfer.
