Pakistan’s former prime minister Imran Khan was on Tuesday (9) arrested in connection with the Al-Qadir Trust case from outside the high court in national capital Islamabad where he had gone to attend two hearings in the afternoon.

The 70-year-old cricketer-turned-politician was taken in custody by Pakistan Rangers officials from the court premises.

The news of Khan’s arrest prompted the high court’s chief justice, Aamer Farooq, to ask the police chief of Islamabad, secretary of the interior ministry and additional attorney general to appear before the court within 15 minutes and explain why the former prime minister and leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf was arrested and in which case.

The veteran leader’s arrest comes a day after Pakistan’s military refused his accusations against a serving senior intelligence officer of involvement in an assassination attempt on him. Khan doubled down on the allegations in a video message hours before he was arrested.

About Al-Qadir Trust case:

Khan, his wife Bushra Bibi and some of their close aides formed the Al-Qadir Project Trust which was aimed at forming the Al-Qadir University to give ‘quality education’ in the Sohawa Tehsil in Jhelum district of the northern province of Punjab.

As per reports, Khan and others allegedly made a settlement with a property tycoon which caused Pakistan’s national exchequer a loss of millions of pounds.

The matter came to light when Pakistan’s media said that Pakistani rupees worth 180 million (£500,644) were received by the trust when the records unveiled expenses of around 8.52 million Pakistani rupees (£23,697), India Today reported.
