Weeks ahead of Modi, Rahul Gandhi to visit US, address NRIs in New York

The Indian National Congress leader is also likely to visit Washington DC and Los Angeles during his over-a-week-long stay in the US.

Indian National Congress leader and former parliamentarian Rahul Gandhi is set to visit the US in the first week of June. According to sources in the Indian Overseas Congress, the former Congress chief will address non-resident Indians (NRIs) in New York on June 4.

Gandhi is also likely to visit Washington DC and Los Angeles during his over-a-week-long stay in the US, they said on Tuesday (16).

The sources said that during his visit, he would address NRIs in New York on June 4 but the venue has not been finalised and would be fixed this week.

During his US visit, he may interact with university students as well.

The 52-year-old leader’s visit to the US will take place weeks ahead of prime minister Narendra Modi’s visit on June 22.

Gandhi had an eventful UK visit in March

In March this year, Gandhi had visited the UK during which his remarks alleging that the structures of Indian democracy are under attack and there is a “full-scale assault” on the country’s institutions, had created a row back home.

His remarks had triggered a political slugfest, with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party accusing him of maligning India on foreign soil and seeking foreign interventions, and the Congress hitting back at the ruling party by citing instances of Modi raising internal politics abroad.

Gandhi was convicted by a court in the western state of Gujarat in a defamation case and was disqualified as a member of the Indian parliament days after his visit to the UK.
