Indian prime minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday (27) joined several leaders from across the world to pay tributes to late Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe at his state funeral in Tokyo. He paid floral tributes to the longest-serving Japanese premier who was assassinated during a campaign in Nara, Japan, on July 8.
Modi was known to be close to Abe and had hosted him at a roadshow in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, in September 2017.

Japan held a controversial state funeral for Abe with his widow Akie carrying his ashes into a hall in Tokyo where thousands gathered and mourned. The event has been criticised over the huge expenditure it incurred. It is only the second time in the history of Japan that a prime minister got a state funeral.
Abe was one of Japan’s most recognised political figures, known for cultivating international alliances and his economic strategy known as “Abenomics”.
Modi on Tuesday also met his Japanese counterpart Fumio Kishida and underlined Abe’s contributions in strengthening the bilateral relationship between India and Japan and his vision for a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific region.
India had observed a day’s mourning on July 9 in the honour of Abe.
