Prime minister Narendra Modi has a knack of engaging in unconventional acts in the presence of foreign leaders, be it making tea or giving a bear hug. On Monday (20), the world remained witness to one such moment when Modi was seen eating ‘golgappas’ (a popular Indian snack) with his Japanese counterpart Fumio Kishida in New Delhi.
Kishida arrived in India on a two-day visit on Monday to boost bilateral ties with the south Asian nation and also launched a new plan for a free and open Indo-Pacific. India and Japan are members of the four-member Quad which aims at countering China.
On Sunday (19), Kishida said the objective of his visit to India was to further deepen the “special strategic and global partnership” between the two countries. The Japanese leader also invited Modi for the G7 summit to be held in his country in May and the Indian prime minister expressed gratitude.

In between the serious issues of diplomacy, the two prime ministers made time for the ‘golgappas’.
Modi shared pictures of him enjoying the ‘golgappas’ with Kishida on his Twitter account and captioned the tweet, “My friend PM @kishida230 enjoyed Indian snacks including Golgappas.”

This is Kishida’s second visit to India. In March last year, he had announced during his visit to the south Asian nation an investment target of five trillion yen over the next five years.
