Transforming into a character for a film is a process that can stay with an actor long after the cameras stop rolling. Vicky Kaushal, known for his versatility, is no stranger to this. In his upcoming film Chhaava, he will portray the legendary Maratha king, Chatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, in a role that demands a deep emotional and physical commitment.
Vicky shared that the demanding nature of his shoot schedule left little room for personal time. “When you’re shooting non-stop, you hardly get any off time because 12 hours of shoot, 2 hours of training before, 2 hours of action rehearsal after that. You hardly have time to just come back home and by that time you just want to reach the bed and go to sleep and 6 hours you are back at it again,” he explained. With such a packed routine, Vicky admitted that it was hard to disconnect from the character when he finally got a break.

His wife, Katrina Kaif, noticed some lingering effects from his intense role preparation. “One thing she (Katrina) has noticed and told me… is the residue of that walk naa, woh thoda mere saath reh jaata hai. Which, for Chhaava, nobody was minding, not even my wife. Like ‘yeh bohot sahi lag raha hai’ (laughs). So this is good.” Vicky joked about the lingering traits of his character’s walk that stayed with him, and Katrina found it fitting rather than unsettling.
Kaushal also mentioned how the role affected his mental state. “Sometimes I just go a little silent because… your mind is constantly there. Even for those 8 hours of home time, your mind is still running, okay what all we did today, what could I have done differently, what is there tomorrow, this is what needs to be done tomorrow,” he said. This often left him feeling disconnected in conversations, though Katrina, being a part of the industry, understood.
Fans are eagerly anticipating Vicky Kaushal’s portrayal of Sambhaji Maharaj in Chhaava, set to release in theaters on February 14.
