Amid speculation that a number of countries from various parts of the world are showing interest to join the BRICS group which comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, the Russian ambassador to Venezuela has said that the South American nation has not spoken to Moscow about its possible accession to the five-nation bloc.

Russian ambassador to Venezuela Sergey Melik-Bagdasarov confirmed this to the country’s state-run TASS news agency in an interview.

He said, “Venezuelan partners closely follow the activities of BRICS and attach great importance to this format as an example of successful interaction within the multipolar world.

“As for the possible accession to this format, we have not yet received any relevant appeals or statements to that effect from the Venezuelan leadership,” Melik-Bagdasarov said when asked about Caracas’s interest in joining BRICS.

On Monday (1), Algerian president Abdelmadjid Tebboune said that his country was interested in joining BRICS.

In June, Argentina and Iran applied to join BRICS.

Later, president of the BRICS International Forum Purnima Anand said that countries such as Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Turkey were also planning to apply for BRICS membership.

According to her, a decision on the admission of some of these nations might be taken at the next summit which is supposed to be held in South Africa in 2023.
