One succumbed to his injuries after five passengers jumped off a train in Jhansi in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh on Thursday (24) after realising that they boarded the wrong train.
The deceased, identified as Ajay Kumar, 33, was crushed under the wheels of the train while the remaining four, including two of his siblings, were injured. One of them is in coma while the other three escaped with minor injuries.
The incident happened when the victims panicked after the train they boarded left the Jhansi railway station. They all jumped off the moving train barely a kilometre from the station, leading to the death and injuries.
The men were going to Rajahmundry
The passengers were heading to Rajahmundry in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh. The injured included Ajay’s siblings Vijay Kumar and Sanjay and cousin Sandeep Kumar and uncle Jagmohan. Vijay suffered a serious injury and is in coma. All of them are wage labourers in a private company in Andhra.
Sandeep Kumar later told reporters that they reached Jhansi from Gorakhpur in a bus and was supposed to take a train for Rajahmundry, located around 930 miles south. But they boarded a Delhi-bound train instead.
Government railway police of Jhansi division said they received a distress message after the accident took place. “The five men had jumped off the train after it had travelled nearly a kilometre. The victims panicked and jumped off the train after they realized the mistake,” sub-inspector Sandeep Kumar said, according to ANI.
He said while Ajay’s body had been sent for autopsy, the injured were admitted to Jhansi’s government medical college.
