US CONGRESSMAN Andy Levin on Friday (19) welcomed the Narendra Modi government’s decision to repeal the three contentious farm laws in India against which farmers had been protesting for several months saying they would facilitate the corporates at their expense.
Prime minister Modi himself announced on the occasion of ‘Gurupurab‘ (birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev) that the government decided to withdraw the laws and urged the protesting famers to return home. While many saw it as the prime minister’s loss of face against the determined protesters, others felt it was a calculated move ahead of some key state elections. Indian home minister Amit Shah, who is the second in command in Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party, welcomed the decision saying it was statesman-like.

Levin, a Democratic lawmaker from the state of Michigan, said in a tweet, “Glad to see that after more than a year of protests, the three farm bills in India will be repealed.
“This is proof that when workers stick together, they can defeat corporate interests and achieve progress – in India and around the world.”

He said the constitutional process to repeal the laws will be completed in the upcoming parliamentary session later this month.
