US AMBASSADOR to Kyiv Bridget A Brink on Wednesday (5) said that India, with its increasing global prominence and current G20 presidency, can play a significant role in resolving the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Brink highlighted India’s leadership and its G20 theme of “One Earth, One Family, One Future” as reflective of the spirit needed to achieve peace at a special online briefing of a small group of reporters in New Delhi. She emphasised the war’s implications on the global economy, food security and the principles of the United Nations Charter on sovereignty and territorial integrity.
While India has not explicitly condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine, it has advocated for dialogue and diplomacy to resolve the conflict.
Brink acknowledged Indian prime minister Narendra Modi’s stance that the current era is not for war, underscoring the tragic human cost of the conflict in Ukraine.
At a bilateral meeting with Russian president Vladimir Putin on September 16 last year in the Uzbek city of Samarkand, Modi said “today’s era is not of war” and nudged the Russian leader to end the conflict.
She stressed the importance of democratic countries defending the principles of the UN Charter, which align with India’s commitment to freedom, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. Brink commended India for upholding the global order based on democracy and rule of law, and appreciated its partnership through the G20 and the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue or Quad, as well as its leadership in advancing multilateral cooperation.
The US ambassador also praised India’s efforts in supporting developing countries and encouraging initiatives like the Black Sea grain initiative to ensure global food access. She noted India’s commitment to supporting the Global South through its G20 presidency.
