UNIVERSAL Pictures has purchased the rights to Britney Spears’s best-selling memoir, “The Woman In Me,” to develop a biopic, the studio has announced.
Jon Chu, known for directing “Crazy Rich Asians,” is set to direct the film.
Spears herself confirmed her involvement in the project on social media, stating, “Excited to share with my fans that I’ve been working on a secret project with #MarcPlatt. He’s always made my favorite movies. Stay tuned.”
The memoir details Spears’s journey from a child star to a global pop sensation, including her public breakdown and legal battles with her father. Published last October, it has sold over 2.5 million copies in the United States.
Universal won the film adaptation rights in a “highly competitive auction,” with Marc Platt, producer of “La La Land,” overseeing the project. The film’s release date has not yet been announced.
Spears’s memoir criticizes her family and the entertainment industry. It also reveals personal details, including Justin Timberlake urging her to have an abortion and her brief affair with Colin Farrell.
Following her public breakdown, Spears was placed under a conservatorship controlled by her father, Jamie Spears. This was dissolved in 2021 after significant public support to “Free Britney.” Her father maintains that he acted in her best interest.
Universal has a history of successful musical biopics, such as “Straight Outta Compton” and “8 Mile.” Jon Chu is currently directing the movie adaptation of the musical “Wicked,” set to release its first part in November.
