AN Indian-origin man named Rishi Casseeram has been handed a nine-year prison sentence by a court in the UK for a violent attack on one of his neighbors with a wooden pole. The incident, which occurred in June last year, left the victim with severe facial fractures and extensive bruising to his back, as per the findings of the Bedfordshire Police who conducted the investigation.
Casseeram, 35, was apprehended at his residence in Luton, eastern England, and subsequently sentenced at Luton Crown Court earlier this month. Detective Sergeant Bill Haigh, representing the Bedfordshire Police, described the attack as “extraordinarily violent” and left a profoundly shocking crime scene. The victim, forever impacted by Casseeram’s actions, will have to cope with the consequences for the rest of his life, Haigh said, expressing satisfaction in bringing violent offenders like Casseeram to justice and removing them from the streets of Bedfordshire.
During the court proceedings, it was revealed that the victim and Casseeram had engaged in a verbal altercation a few days before the brutal assault. On June 25, 2022, the victim returned home only to encounter Casseeram advancing towards him inside his flat. Unfortunately, he was unable to shut the door in time, and Casseeram forced his way in. According to medical professionals, the victim’s injuries were consistent with those inflicted by a blunt object, possibly resembling a baseball bat. The victim recounted to the police officers that Casseeram relentlessly struck him, expressing disbelief at the brutality of the attack.
Further investigation by the authorities unveiled that Casseeram had also punched another neighbor in the face the day before the serious assault. In court, he attempted to claim that someone else was responsible for the severe attack and that he acted in self-defence during the other incident. However, the jury found Casseeram guilty of causing grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent and assault in December last year.
The sentencing, which took place on July 21 at Luton Crown Court, resulted in eight years of imprisonment for the GBH charge and an additional year for the assault. The presiding judge regarded Casseeram as a “dangerous” offender, requiring an additional four-year period of supervision or monitoring after his release from prison.
