Indian fans were left deeply dejected after their favourite team failed to find the nails after finding Bangladesh in the coffin in the second one-day international (ODI) at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Wednesday (7) but India captain Rohit Sharma received a massive shout-out on social media as he came out at No.9 with a serious thumb injury and almost took his side across the line.

However, Sharma, who hit 51 not out in just 28 balls, failed to hit the final ball of the match for the maximum as India lost the game by only five runs while chasing 272 to concede the three-match series, their second straight one after the T20 World Cup debacle in Australia last month. He also completed 500 sixes in ODIs during his knock and is next only to the West Indies’ Chris Gayle in the list.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar questioned Sharma’s decision to bat at No.9. According to him, the 35-year-old batting maestro, who has three double centuries in the same format, could have come out to bat at No.7 if he could at No.9 and that could have made a difference.

However, Twitter was abuzz with Sharma’s heroics and accolades poured in for the batter who has now been ruled out of the rest of the Bangladesh series that includes another ODI and two Tests.

Also, #tum_pehele_kyun_nahi_aaye (why didn’t you come out earlier) started trending on Twitter.

Here are some reactions that Twitter came up with after Sharma’s incredible knock:
