INDIA white-ball opener Shikhar Dhawan was on Wednesday (6) named as the captain of the Team India squad for the three-match away one-day international series against the West Indies starting July 22. Regular captain Rohit Sharma and senior players such as Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant have been rested for the series.

The 36-year-old southpaw, who led India in three one-day internationals in Sri Lanka last year and bagged the series 2-1, last played in a 50-over match in February. He was chosen as the captain of the side after senior players were in England to play a Test series. Current Team India coach Rahul Dravid served as the coach of the squad that Dhawan led in the island-nation.

Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson have been picked as two wicket-keeper-batters in the side.

Arshdeep Singh, the left-arm pacer who has been picked in a full-strength squad for the England one-day internationals later this month, has been retained along with Prasidh Krishna, Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur.

Ravindra Jadeja, who will be Dhawan’s deputy, will be assisted by Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel and Deepak Hooda as the spinners in the squad.

Dhawan India’s 6th captain in seven months

Dhawan is the latest man to captain an Indian side after Pant led the Men in Blue in a home T20 interntioanl series against South Africa, Pandya who led in two T20 internationals against Ireland and Bumrah who was in charge of the Indian Test team in the just concluded fifth Test match against England. Earlier in the year, KL Rahul captained the national side in a Test match and the one-day series in South Africa after Virat Kohli, who led India in the first and third Test, stepped down from captaincy after the Test series.

Twitter was flooded with funny reactions over Dhawan becoming the India captain for yet another international series. Here are some posts:
