FORMER India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who was known for his swashbuckling batting and trophy-winning habit during his playing days, turned 41 on Thursday (7) and Indian cricket fans could not stop celebrating the moment with flourish. Dhoni is currently in England where he celebrated his birthday party where India wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant was also seen.
Twitter was abuzz with wishes for the man who was once a ticket examiner in the Indian railways but went on to become one of India’s most successful captains. He won the country the inaugural T20 World Cup in South Africa in 2007, the 50-over World Cup at home in 2011 and the Champions Trophy in England in 2013.
The former wicket-keeper from Ranchi in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand played for the national side between 2004 and 2019 during which he represented the country in 90 Tests, 350 one-day internationals and 98 T20 internationals, scoring more than 17,000 international runs and effecting more than 820 dismissals behind the stumps. He has also been a big name in India’s domestic Indian Premier League where he has captained the Chennai Super Kings franchise for almost all seasons and led them to the crown on four occasions.
In 2016, a Hindi film was made on Dhoni named ‘M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story’ in which the ace cricketer’s role was portrayed by late Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput.
From former India players to journalists to the International Cricket Council to common fans, congratulatory messages came in pouring for Dhoni or MSD as he is popularly called, thick and fast.
Here are some reactions on Twitter:
