IN a shocking incident, at least 20 people were killed in lightning strikes in various areas after unseasonal rain lashed the western Indian state of Gujarat on Sunday (26), officials said.
Crops were also damaged in the incident.
Home minister Amit Shah condoled the deaths and said the local administration was looking into the relief work.

“I am deeply saddened by the news of the death of many people due to bad weather and lightning in various cities of Gujarat. I express my deepest condolences for the irreparable loss to those who lost their loved ones in this tragedy. The local administration is engaged in relief work, praying for the speedy recovery of the injured,” he wrote in Gujarati on X.

On Sunday, 234 of Gujarat’s 252 talukas received rainfall, said Gujarat’s State Emergency Operation Center. Heavy downpour was recorded in districts such as Surat, Surendranagar, Tapi, Bharuch, Kheda and Amreli, amounting from 50 to 117 millimetres in 16 hours.
According to the IMD, a cyclonic circulation was prevailing over the northeast Arabian Sea, extending its influence over the Saurashtra and Kutch region in south and west Gujarat, respectively.
