In what will be the first official visit from Ukraine since Russian troops launched an offensive against the east European country in February last year, its first deputy foreign minister Emine Dzhaparova will be in India for four days starting Monday (10).

She will discuss bilateral ties, exchange views on the current situation in Ukraine besides global issues of mutual interests, according to official sources.

During her visit, Dzhaparova, 39, will meet India’s minister of state for external affairs and culture Meenakshi Lekhi and deputy national security adviser Vikram Misri.

“India shares warm and friendly relations and multifaceted cooperation with Ukraine. Over the last 30 years of establishing diplomatic relations, bilateral cooperation between the two countries has made significant progress in the areas of trade, education, culture and defence. The visit will be an occasion to further mutual understanding and interests,” an official statement said.

According to a report by The Hindu, the Ukrainian diplomat is expected to seek humanitarian aid and equipment to repair energy infrastructure that have been damaged in the Russian invasion.

Dzhaparova is also expected to invite prime minister Narendra Modi to visit Kyiv, the newspaper added.

India has been accused of not blaming its old ally Russia despite Moscow attacking Ukraine and buying oil from it even after the west imposed sanctions. New Delhi has sought a diplomatic solution to the crisis and Modi asked Russian president Vladimir Putin at a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation meeting in Uzbekistan last year that this is not an era of war, earning the west’s accolades.
