Tokyo Olympics: Hockey, boxing India’s saving grace on Day 5

INDIAN athletes have found things tough at the Olympics after Mirabai Chanu won a silver in weightlifting on Saturday (24). The Asian side had a disappointing day in field on Monday (26) and Tuesday (27) was not too better either with the exception of the men’s hockey team trouncing Spain 3-0 in a crucial Pool A game and boxer Lovlina Borgohain beating Germany’s Nadine Aptez in the women’s welter (64-69 kilogram) to reach the quarterfinals.

In shooting, India were in for yet another shock as both their pairs — Manu Bhaker and Saurabh Chaudhury and Yashaswini Singh Deswal and Abhishek Verma failed to qualify for the medal rounds. In 10-metre air rifle mixed team qualification stage 1, both the pairs of Elavenil Valarivan and Divyansh Singh Panwar and Anjum Moudgil and Deepak Kumar failed to progress from Stage 1 of qualifying and crashed out of the medal rounds.

India’s disappointing Day 4 at Tokyo Olympics

In badminton, the pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty defeated Great Britain’s Ben Lane and Sean Vendy but it was still not enough as the Indian duo failed to reach the quarter-finals on game difference.

In table tennis, India’s Sharath Kamal failed to tame current OLympic and world champion Long Ma of China in the third round who beat him 4-1.

In sailing, India’s Nethra Kumanan finished 32nd in Race 05 and 38th in Race 06 in women’s one-person dinghy — laser radial. In the men’s one person dinghy, Vishnu Saravanan finished 23rd in Race 04 — laser. He also finished 22nd in Race 05 and 12th in Race 06. In men’s skiff — 49 er — Race 01, Ganapathy Kelapanda and Varun Thakkar finished 18th. The Race 02 and Race 03 were postponed.
