IN A horrific incident, three women from the western Indian state of Gujarat were killed when the SUV they were travelling in swerved off the road and hurtled over a bridge to crash into trees in the US. The accident took place in Greenville County in South Carolina and officials said it was a case of over-speeding.

One passenger reportedly survived and was hospitalised.

The deceased — Rekhaben Patel, Sangitaben Patel, and Manishaben Patel hailed from Anand district of Gujarat.

Greenville County Coroner’s Office said the ill-fated vehicle, which was travelling northbound on a highway, veered across the lanes and went over an embankment and was thrown at least 20 feet into the air before landing into the trees on the opposite side of the bridge.

Mangled pieces of the car were found stuck on a tree, making the speed at which it was travelling and the impact evident.

“It is obvious they were traveling above the posted speed limit,” chief deputy coroner Mike Ellis told news channel WSPA. He also clarified that no other cars were involved.

Ellis told local media it is rare that a vehicle leaves the roadway at such a high speed, jumping four to six lanes of traffic and lands in the trees approximately 20 feet above the ground.
