She beat him in an intense Conservative Party contest to become the prime minister to replace Boris Johnson in September. But Liz Truss’s run at the top was chaotic from Day 1 and it eventually ended on October 20 when she announced her decision to quit as the premier, which earned her the dubious distinction of becoming the shortest-serving leader of the UK.

But the 47-year-old did not stop herself from congratulating Rishi Sunak, the party colleague she beat in the weeks-long race to replace Johnson, who emerged as her successor on Monday (24).

Taking to her official Twitter account, Liz said, “Congratulations @RishiSunak on being appointed as Leader of the Conservative Party and our next Prime Minister. You have my full support.”

The 42-year-old Sunak, who is the first Indian-origin prime minister of the UK, is one of the wealthiest politicians in Westminster and the country’s youngest leader in modern times. He also became the UK’s third prime minister in less than two months.

Sunak was set to be appointed by King Charles III on Tuesday (25) and will be taking over the reins during one of the most turbulent eras in British political history.

Sunak, who served as the finance minister in Johnson’s government, said the UK was facing a “profound economic challenge”.

“We now need stability and unity, and I will make it my utmost priority to bring our party and our country together,” he said in a statement, adding, “I pledge that I will serve you with integrity and humility; and I will work day in, day out to deliver for the British people.”

Sunak is the UK-born son of Indian-origin general practitioner Yashvir and Usha. His family migrated to Britain from East Africa in the 1960s.
