EDITORIAL POLICY

Purpose and Scope

This Editorial Policy establishes the standards, principles, and procedures that govern journalism at India Weekly. It applies to all editorial staff, freelance contributors, commissioned writers, photographers, videographers, and any individual producing material under the India Weekly masthead. It ensures reporting is accurate, fair, independent, accountable, and aligned with the South Asian perspective. This policy operates alongside the Terms and Conditions, Privacy Policy, and applicable legal requirements.

Editorial Independence

India Weekly preserves editorial independence. Decisions regarding what to publish, story coverage, and allocation of resources are made solely by editors and journalists based on newsworthiness, public interest, and professional judgment. No advertiser, sponsor, owner, or third party may exert undue influence over editorial content. Conflicts of interest must be declared and managed according to internal policies.

Accuracy, Sourcing, and Verification

Journalists must verify information using reliable sources, prioritize primary sources, cite appropriately, and seek comment from affected parties where practicable. Headlines, summaries, and visuals must accurately reflect content. Unverified claims must be clearly indicated. Records of source material and verification processes must be maintained for accountability.

Corrections, Clarifications, and Retractions

Errors are corrected promptly and transparently. Corrections state what was incorrect, the correct information, and the date of correction. Serious errors may result in article retraction with explanation and apology. A corrections log is maintained internally to ensure accountability and continuous improvement.

Fairness, Balance, and Non-Discrimination

Reporting must be fair, balanced, and impartial. Opinion and commentary are clearly labeled. Coverage respects the dignity of individuals and communities, avoiding bias, stereotyping, or sensationalism. Special care is taken with protected groups, minorities, and sensitive topics.

Handling Sensitive Topics

Reporting on sexual violence, abuse, children, mental health, vulnerable populations, race, and religion requires special care. Graphic imagery is used only when essential, accompanied by warnings and context. Medical or health claims are verified against authoritative sources. Identifiable information of victims, minors, or vulnerable individuals is protected unless informed consent is obtained or overriding public interest exists.

Anonymous Sources and Confidentiality

Anonymous sources may only be used when information is essential, cannot be obtained from on-the-record sources, and is in the public interest. Editors verify reliability and protect identities in line with legal requirements. Whistleblowers and confidential material require legal and editorial guidance.

Sponsored Content and Advertising Separation

Sponsored content, advertorials, and branded features are clearly labeled and distinguished from editorial journalism. The editorial team remains independent; advertisers do not influence editorial content. Modifications for compliance purposes must be disclosed. Editorial practices follow the Editors’ Code of Practice issued by the Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO).

User-Generated Content and Moderation

Reader contributions are moderated for clarity, length, and legal compliance. Defamatory, abusive, illegal, or policy-violating content is removed. Users retain ownership but grant India Weekly a license to publish and use submitted material.

Legal Risk Management and Editorial Review

Stories with high legal risk, including libel, privacy, contempt, or national security concerns, require review by the legal team before publication. Editors ensure adequate attribution, evidence, and context. Senior editorial oversight is mandatory for complex legal or ethical issues, with a documented decision-making process.

Social Media, Multiplatform Publishing, and Amplification

Editorial standards apply across all platforms. Journalists maintain accuracy, context, and integrity when sharing or promoting content. Corrections and updates are applied consistently across all channels.

Reader Engagement, Complaints, and Right of Reply

Editorial complaints are investigated by senior staff, and corrective actions are communicated to complainants. Subjects of reporting are offered a right of reply.

Training, Standards, and Continuous Improvement

Editorial staff receive ongoing training in ethics, law, fact-checking, diversity, inclusion, and technical skills. Processes and guidance are reviewed regularly to reflect changes in law, technology, and professional standards.

Governance and Compliance

Asian Media Group USA Inc ensures implementation and periodic review of this policy in consultation with legal and compliance teams. This policy provides transparency, maintains editorial standards, and upholds the reputation of India Weekly.
