A SCHOOL teacher in Ahmedabad has been detained by the police after a video of him ruthlessly beating a student went viral.
In a CCTV footage from Madhav Public School, the teacher, identified as Abhishek Patel, is seen twisting the arm of a student, pulling his hair and slamming him against the wall.
He is also seen slapping the student nearly a dozen times and pushing him to the ground.
The parents of the student have filed a police complaint.
After the video went viral, the District Education Officer, Rohit Chaudhari, issued a notice to the school’s principal and ordered the teacher’s suspension.
Chaudhari told Hindustan Times that the school authorities have suspended the teacher and also removed the principal for not reporting the incident and trying to downplay it.
Corporal punishment is illegal in India, but it is widely prevalent in schools.
The supreme court had in 2000 banned the use of corporal punishment in all educational institutions.
The Right to Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, 2009, also makes corporal punishment in schools a punishable offence.
It is also illegal under the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015.
