AT THE trailer launch of his upcoming film “Kanguva”, Suriya credited Aamir Khan for bringing him to national attention after the Hindi remake of “Ghajini”.

The National Award-winning actor noted that Aamir’s role in popularising the story beyond Tamil cinema helped him gain recognition across India.

“It all started with Aamir sir talking to the media about me, telling them that I was the one who starred in the original version of ‘Ghajini’,” Suriya said, acknowledging Khan’s efforts to highlight the Tamil film’s origin. He added, “Sincere thanks to him for putting my name on the map.”

Suriya’s 2005 Tamil film “Ghajini”, directed by A R Murugadoss, became widely known after Aamir starred in the 2009 Hindi-language remake. The success of the Hindi version brought the original film and Suriya’s work to the forefront of Indian cinema.

In addition to “Ghajini”, Suriya highlighted how his role in the 2010 Tamil film “Singham” also played a part in his growing fame, especially after the Hindi remake starring Ajay Devgn in 2011.

“Singham was a very important film, which again brought me to the masses. Recently, when I went to Varanasi, people still remember me as ‘Singham Suriya’,” he said.

Speaking about his upcoming film “Kanguva”, Suriya expressed gratitude for the directors and producers who have supported him throughout his 27-year career.

“It’s been 27 years. Still, people want to watch me, and filmmakers still want to cast me. If they have a script and think of me, it’s because of my previous producers and directors who have kept me relevant all these years,” he said.

“Kanguva” is scheduled to release on November 14 and is described as a fantasy action film.

The movie is directed by Siva and features Bobby Deol as the antagonist. Suriya expressed his admiration for working alongside Deol, stating, “It is not easy to stand in front of Bobby sir and say, ‘I’m standing in front of you.'”

The film is being released in 10 languages in 3D, and a sequel is already being planned, according to producer K E Gnanavel Raja.
