VETERAN filmmaker Sudhir Mishra has expressed his support for Anubhav Sinha following the controversy surrounding the show “IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack,” which depicts the 1999 hijacking of an Indian Airlines flight.

Some viewers raised objections to the use of Hindu code names for the terrorists, accusing the show of distorting historical facts.

Netflix responded to the controversy by updating the disclaimer to clarify the real and code names of the hijackers.

Mishra, known for films like “Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi,” dismissed the criticism, stating, “He has made the series quite thoughtfully. It is up to you to react or not react. But I found it to be very good.”

The show features well-known actors such as Vijay Varma, Pankaj Kapur, Naseeruddin Shah, and Dia Mirza, but has also drawn criticism for its portrayal of terrorists in a humane light.

Mishra defended the approach, saying Sinha was following the duty of a storyteller. “If you show a character as a villain and he just roars and shouts, then you will not identify him in real life,” he explained.

Sinha and Mishra are longtime friends, with Mishra emphasizing that Sinha’s patriotism should not be questioned. “You will not find a more patriotic Indian than Anubhav Sinha,” he added.

Mishra also spoke about his relationships with other filmmakers in the industry, praising talents like Anurag Kashyap, Vishal Bhardwaj, and Hansal Mehta. He stressed that success within their group benefits them all.

The second season of Mishra’s series “Tanaav” premieres on SonyLIV on September 12, continuing the story set in Kashmir with actors Manav Vij and Arbaaz Khan.
