A South Korean woman, who was allegedly molested on the streets of the city of Mumbai, India’s financial capital, on Tuesday (29) night said she was satisfied with the action taken by the local police against the accused.
On Thursday (1), the Mumbai Police arrested two men for allegedly molesting and stalking the woman, who is known to be a YouTuber, in the city’s Khar area. A video surfaced on Wednesday showing the woman, who was later identified as Hyojeong Park, being sexually harassed by a man. A Twitter handle which shared the video claimed that the woman is from South Korea and was livestreaming in suburban Khar when the incident took place around 8 pm local time on Tuesday.
The video showed a young man coming very close to the woman and trying to pull her hand even as she protested. He later appeared again with another man on a motorcycle and offered her a lift. The woman refused and told them in broken English that her house is nearby.
Later, she told NDTV that two young males yelled at her on the road when she was walking back to her hotel and tried to kiss her. She added that the police called her to inform that they would send a woman constable to get her statement after the arrests were made.
“I tried my best not to escalate the situation. He started to grab my waist and drag me to his motorcycle. I wasn’t feeling comfortable and said I’m not comfortable,” she was quoted as saying by NDTV. She added that they tried to follow her and asked for her phone number. “I gave them a fake number, so they would leave,” she said.
The woman was seen rattled in the video clip but she did not agree that India’s image took a beating because of the incident.
“This happens everywhere, not just in India. Indians are as beautiful as other parts of the world,” she said.
“I will not leave India, I will not let this ruin my trip,” she said, adding that she has met many “amazing” people during her visit to the country.
She also praised the Mumbai Police for its action and said she had faced similar experience in other countries as well.
The woman shared the video from her Twitter account, and wrote, “Last night on stream, there was a guy who harassed me. I tried my best not to escalate the situation and leave because he was with his friend. And some people said that it was initiated by me being too friendly and engaging the conversation. Makes me think again about streaming.”
