BOARD of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly on Wednesday (1) posted a mysterious tweet saying he was planning to start something that he felt would “probably help a lot of people”. He also said that he expected to get support as he entered the new chapter in his life. Speculation was rife over the former India cricket captain’s future but the Indian cricket board said he would not quit as the president.
BCCI secretary Jay Shah told Indian news agency ANI that the former cricketer continues to be the president of the cricket-governing body after his cryptic tweet sparked speculation. “The rumours doing rounds about Mr Sourav Ganguly stepping down from the post of BCCI President are factually incorrect. We have some exciting times in the form of media rights coming up and my colleagues and I are completely focused on the upcoming opportunity and safeguarding the interest of Indian cricket,” he said.
Ganguly said in his tweet that in 2022, his cricketing journey completed 30 years. The former left-handed batter made his international debut for India in Australia in 1992 but after getting dropped, made a sensational comeback to the national team in 1996 and continued to play till 2008. He also successfully captained India between 2000 and 2005.

In Ganguly’s home state West Bengal, speculation is always rife over him starting a political career. In May, he hosted Indian home minister and ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Amit Shah at his residence in Kolkata but soon after, said that he has close ties with Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee and praised leaders of her Trinamool Congress (TMC).
The BJP and TMC are known to be fierce competitors in Indian politics.
Ganguly so far has quashed the speculation that he is starting a political career. His wife Dona, who is a dancer, has though said that he would be as successful in politics.
Whatever, it is, the tweet from Ganguly, who will turn 50 next month, will keep everybody guessing.
