SHWETA TRIPATHI opened up about the emotional toll of playing Gajgamini Gupta (Golu) in “Mirzapur” and how she navigates the impact of her roles.
Speaking about the upcoming film extension of the series, she said it will maintain the raw and unsanitised tone that has defined the franchise.
Describing the movie as “quite explosive,” Tripathi said, “It’s being written right now, and we’re slowly finding out what’s happening. But, I think, it is not going to be sanitised… I think we should be able to show what’s happening (in society).”
The actor acknowledged that playing Golu across three seasons took a toll on her mental health. “Golu took over me, and it took time to realise that… It was almost like a shadow. It takes over your entire being, and I had to take therapy,” she shared, reflecting on the challenges of detaching from the character.
The cinematic extension, releasing in 2026, will feature returning cast members Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, and Divyenndu under the banner of Excel Entertainment.
While the gritty portrayal of violence and crime has become a hallmark of the series, Tripathi emphasised its ability to provoke thought. “When people close their eyes and become uncomfortable, then they should feel that,” she said, stressing the importance of addressing uncomfortable truths.
The actor also praised the writing team for crafting relatable characters that resonate with audiences. She reflected on the complexity of roles like Munna Tripathi, saying, “Nobody is born evil… We push them to a corner, and when they retaliate, we say what a bad person he is.”
Apart from “Mirzapur”, Tripathi continues to explore diverse roles, with her recent performance in the Netflix series “Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein” receiving critical acclaim.
