Shabana Azmi to be honoured at MAMI film festival

Azmi’s career began with Shyam Benegal’s 1974 film “Ankur,” and in her five-decade-long career she has earned critical acclaim by acting in both parallel and mainstream cinema

VETERAN actor Shabana Azmi will be honoured with the Excellence in Cinema Award at the 2024 MAMI Mumbai Film Festival.

The award ceremony will take place on October 18, followed by a masterclass on October 19 led by actor Vidya Balan, who will discuss Azmi’s five-decade-long journey in the film industry.

Azmi’s career began with Shyam Benegal’s 1974 film “Ankur,” and she went on to star in notable films such as “Arth,” “Swami,” and “Godmother.” Her work spans both parallel and mainstream cinema, earning her widespread recognition.

Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, the Festival Director, expressed the significance of the honour, stating, “Her remarkable versatility and extraordinary body of work over 50 years, beginning with her award-winning debut in ‘Ankur’ in 1974, has enriched the fabric of Indian cinema with some of the most memorable women characters.”

The MAMI Mumbai Film Festival, scheduled from October 19 to October 24, will feature more than 110 films across 50 languages from various genres.
