A MALE student in Senegal was detained on Monday (2) after he disguised himself as a female to sit for national examinations as a proxy for his girlfriend.
The student, who is enrolled in a university in the north of the African nation, was placed under arrest on Monday evening along with his girlfriend, AFP reported.
The duo will be tried on Thursday (5) for “exam fraud”, their lawyer said on Tuesday (3).
“The couple is to be “tried on (Thursday) August 5 for exam fraud and complicity in fraud”, by the court of Diourbel (a town in Senegal),” the prosecutor was quoted as saying by AFP.
It was reported that the student, whose age was not revealed, had moved to Diourbel to sit for the examinations on behalf of his girlfriend, who is a student in a high school in the same town, the prosecution said.
Pictures were posted on social media that showed the male student wearing a red dress with black patterns – wearing a veil with the same colours and a black shawl – to fool the invigilators in the examination hall.
However, on Saturday (31), when the English examination was being held, the supervisors suspected the student’s dress and raised an alarm. The police subsequently came and arrested the student and his girlfriend who was waiting in a hostel in the town, sources said.
