DANCE serves as the central theme connecting Sanya Malhotra to her role as Richa in Arati Kadav’s film “Mrs”.
The film, a Hindi adaptation of the acclaimed Malayalam movie “The Great Indian Kitchen” (2021), explores the journey of a professional dancer navigating life in a patriarchal household after marriage.
Malhotra, a trained dancer in contemporary and ballet forms, found this project to be a unique convergence of her passions for acting and dance.
“This is what I was looking for. I love acting, and I am extremely passionate about dancing. Brinda Gopal ma’am has done the choreography for the film, and it just blends with the story so well. Richa is really passionate about dancing, she is a professional dancer. When she gets married, she is trying to love what her life has become after marriage but also doesn’t want to lose herself,” Malhotra said in an interview.
The film recently premiered at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa on November 20. Directed by Kadav, the movie is produced by Jio Studios in collaboration with Baweja Studios. According to Kadav, “Mrs” is a conversation with its audience, a departure from her previous introspective works like the sci-fi film Cargo.
“For me, if it (the film) is not speaking to everybody in the audience or people at large, then I would be really disappointed. So, I want it to speak to a lot of people. I think it is reaching a lot of people right now (through film festivals like IFFI),” Kadav said.
Harman Baweja, one of the producers, highlighted the ingrained nature of patriarchy, describing it as a “generational issue.” He shared his perspective: “There is still a long way to go for us because it (patriarchy) is deeply ingrained in us. It’s not something that’s going to happen overnight.”
The film also features Nishant Dahiya and Kanwaljit Singh in pivotal roles.
