Russian president Vladimir Putin has reportedly survived an assassination attempt, according to one report in Euro Weekly News which said the information was released on the General GVR Telegram channel on Wednesday (14).

It said that it is not known when the attempt took place.

While speculation is rife over the health conditions of the 69-year-old leader and threats to his life since Russia invaded Ukraine earlier this year, he publicly said in 2017 that he has managed to survive a minimum of five assassination attempts.

In May, a military official from Ukraine had confirmed that Putin survived one such attempt, just months after his country launched its military operation in the east European nation. He said that the attempt was made in Caucus, a region between the Black Sea and Caspian Sea.

Coming back to the claims about the latest attempt, the account on the Telegram channel said Putin’s limousine was targeted and it was quickly driven to safety even as smoke came out of it.

According to the outlet, Putin was unharmed and a number of arrests had been made.

According to news.com.au, Putin was travelling to his official residence in a decoy motorcade when the incident happened.

“On the way to the residence, a few kilometres away, the first escort car was blocked by an ambulance, the second escort car drove around without stopping (due to the) sudden obstacle, and during the detour of the obstacle,” one update posted on the channel as reported by the outlet said.

The incident also happens at a time when Russian officials are calling for Putin’s resignation in the wake of Moscow suffering “significant” setbacks against a Ukrainian counter attack.
