India captain Rohit Sharma, who came out to bat in the second one-day international against Bangladesh earlier this month at No.9 after sustaining a serious thumb injury and took his side within a striking distance of a victory, has been ruled out of the second Test against the same opponents starting in Mirpur on Thursday (22).

On Tuesday (20), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that the 35-year-old Sharma will not be available for the second match. He could not play the third ODI and the first Test, both of which India won emphatically under the leadership of KL Rahul.

India are leading the two-Test series 1-0 after winning the first match in Chittagong by 188 runs.

Sharma was not available for selection in the first match after he was ruled out of the ODI series. The ace batter has not yet recovered from the injury and is currently under the observation of the BCCI’s medical team.

“Rohit Sharma is under the care of the BCCI medical team following his left thumb injury, which he sustained during the 2nd ODI against Bangladesh in Dhaka,” the BCCI said.

“The medical team is of the opinion that the injury needs some more time to heal completely before the Indian captain can bat and field with full intensity. He will continue his rehab and will not be available for the second and final Test against Bangladesh,” it added.

Indian fast bowler Navdeep Saini was also ruled out of the second Test due to an abdominal muscle strain.

Cheteshwar Pujara is the vice captain of the Test squad.

India’s big win in Chittagong saw them going up to the second spot in the 2021-23 World Test Championship points table, trailing Australia.
