PRIME minister Rishi Sunak on Friday (8) reached Delhi to attend the G20 summit kicking off on Saturday (8) where he will take part in meetings with world leaders, including his Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi. He was accompanied by his Indian wife Akshata Murty.
It was the first visit to India by the 43-year-old premier of Indian origin since taking over office in October last year.
According to a BBC report, Downing Street said the “historic” visit will be “a powerful reminder of the living bridge between the two countries”.
Akshata was born in the southern Indian state of Karnataka to billionaire businessman Narayana Murthy and philanthropic wife Sudha Murty.
The prime minister’s visit is for the summit of leaders of the Group of 20 — the 19 biggest economies in the world besides the European Union.
Conceived in 1999, G20 has witnessed a growth in stature after the financial crisis of 2008.
While leaders of the top economies meet over broad issues at the summit, they also find opportunities to have one-on-one meetings on the sidelines, more popularly called “bilaterals”.
Ahead of his arrival in India, Sunak said in the flight that he was “excited to be back” in India, referring to it “a country that is very near and dear” to him.
While Sunak is born in the UK, his parents Yashvir and Usha Sunak originate from the northern Indian state of Punjab.
