THE Indian government on Wednesday (8) said information about the crash of the military helicopter that had chief of defence staff General Bipin Rawat on board along with his wife and other officials in the southern state of Tamil Nadu will be shared at an appropriate time.
Information and broadcasting minister Anurag Thakur told reporters the crash in Coonoor in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday afternoon local time will be shared by the ministry concerned when the time is appropriate. He said this when asked about the accident involving the top official who was going to a defence institute in Wellington in Tamil Nadu to deliver a speech.
While 11 out of 14 people on board the helicopter were confirmed dead, the condition of either Rawat or his wife was not known.
Indian defence minister Rajnath Singh was monitoring the situation after the IAF Mi-17V5 chopper met with an accident due to a low visibility in foggy conditions.
Singh reportedly briefed Indian prime minister Narendra Modi about the crash and he asked the chief of the Indian Air Force to reach the site.
Singh also visited the residence of Rawat in New Delhi and briefed his daughter about Rawat. He was likely to make a statement on the incident in parliament on Thursday (9). Indian Army chief General MM Naravane briefed Singh about the incident as well.
The Indian Air Force said a court of inquiry has been ordered into the accident.
