DURING a conversation at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa to celebrate Raj Kapoor’s centenary, actor Ranbir Kapoor addressed criticisms of his films glorifying violence and controversial themes.

Responding to a question about Animal and Sanju, Kapoor emphasised the dual role of an actor as an entertainer and a responsible storyteller.

“It is our responsibility to come with movies which bring a positive change to the society,” Kapoor said.

He also expressed the need to experiment as an artiste, adding, “But having said that, I’m an actor, it’s very important that I also dabble in different genres and characters. But what you’re saying is absolutely correct. We have to be more responsible towards the kind of films we make.”

“Animal”, directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, sparked debate for its portrayal of graphic violence and criticism of misogyny, though it emerged as a major commercial success in 2023.

“Sanju”, a biopic on actor Sanjay Dutt, explored themes of addiction and legal troubles but faced backlash for allegedly whitewashing its subject’s controversial life story.

Kapoor’s comments come amid ongoing discussions in the industry about the impact of films on societal perceptions and values.
