RAKESH ROSHAN’S 1995 film “Karan Arjun”, featuring Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan as reincarnated brothers, is set to be re-released on November 22, just ahead of its 30th anniversary.
The filmmaker described the movie as “the story of a mother’s belief which unfolds like a fairytale.” Over the years, the movie and its iconic dialogues such as “Mere Karan Arjun Ayenge” have gained cult status, frequently referenced in memes and social media.
About the movie’s origins, Roshan said both lead actors had different motivations for taking on the project. “Salman loved it; Shah Rukh didn’t believe in reincarnation but said, ‘If you are making it, I will work on it,’” he recalled.
The movie also starred Rakhee, Amrish Puri, Mamta Kulkarni, and Kajol, alongside a supporting role by comedian Johnny Lever.
Roshan noted the unique familial bond on the sets in the 90s, which lacked vanity vans and fostered camaraderie among the cast. He credited this for the chemistry that continues to resonate with audiences.
“If Johnny Lever was shooting, all the actors, including Amrish Puri ji, would sit together. Actors bonded, and that reflected in their movies,” he said.
Roshan also reflected on the story’s emotional core. “Most reincarnation dramas revolved around lovers. I wanted to explore a mother’s faith bringing her sons back,” he explained, recounting how Amrish Puri questioned the feasibility of the plot.
“I told him, ‘They will come back to avenge their death if you kill them brutally.’ It was all fun.”
The re-release, Roshan said, will be a test of whether the film’s “fairytale emotions” still resonate. “I hope audiences will believe in it again,” he added.
