AS Raj Kapoor’s 100th birth anniversary approaches, his son Randhir Kapoor reflects on the legendary filmmaker’s life and legacy.
Kapoor’s cinematic contributions will be honoured through the RK Film Festival, a three-day retrospective organised by PVR INOX Limited and the Film Heritage Foundation.
The festival, starting Friday, will showcase 10 iconic films, including “Awaara”, “Shree 420”, and “Mera Naam Joker”, in 40 cities across India.
Randhir Kapoor, who directed his father in films like “Dharam Karam”, described him as a dedicated artiste who brought stories of the common man to life.
“He was ahead of his time. He gave voice to the common man,” Randhir said in an interview with PTI. “As an actor, he was obedient and did everything based on instructions of the director.”
Beyond the world of cinema, Raj Kapoor was a devoted family man. “He was very fond of children. In real life, he was a simple man, just like a normal father. Whenever he had time, he would spend it with us, often taking us to eat at his favorite dosa centre in Matunga,” said Randhir, adding that his father’s love for food was well-known.
Randhir also shared his pride in being part of Raj Kapoor’s legacy. “I’m happy and proud to be Raj Kapoor’s son. Even today, we think of him and carry on the way he wanted us to, which is to stay healthy and happy.”
The Kapoor family plans to gather on December 14 to mark the centenary celebrations, expressing gratitude for the enduring admiration people continue to show for Raj Kapoor and his work.
“It’s been so many years since he passed away, and it’s wonderful that people across the globe remember him and his cinema. It makes us emotional,” Randhir said.
