Gandhi, who is currently making efforts to unite India’s opposition ahead of next year’s general elections to take on prime minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party, met around 500 youth in Ladakh on Friday (18). He also attended a football match in Leh and reminisced about his college days as a football player.
While Gandhi arrived in Leh on Thursday (17) on a two-day visit, his tour has now been extended till August 25 when he will be present at the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LADHC) Kargil elections meeting. Gandhi’s visit to the region came four years after the Modi government revoked Article 370 of the Indian Constitution that gave a special status to Jammu and Kashmir and turned it into a Union Territory along with Ladakh, administered from New Delhi.
The Congress and the National Conference, a major political player in the region, has formed an alliance against the BJP for LADHC polls scheduled for September 10.
