CHARANJIT Singh Channi, the chief minister of the northern Indian state of Punjab, has appealed to prime minister Narendra Modi to reopen Kartarpur Corridor ahead of Prakash Purab (birth anniversary) of Sikh Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikhism, later this month.

In October, Channi wrote letters to Modi and Indian home minister Amit Shah to allow pilgrims to visit the gurdwara dedicated to Guru Nanak Dev in Pakistan. In a tweet, Channi, who took over as the chief minister following the resignation of Captain Amarinder Singh, said, “Urging again, I appeal PM @narendramodi to reopen the #KartarpurCorridor before the auspicious occasion of Parkash Purab of Guru Nanak Dev Ji this month. Had written letters to both PM, HM @AmitShah last month to allow pilgrims to visit the Gurdwara Sri Darbar Sahib in Pakistan.”

Earlier on Tuesday (9), Navjot Singh Sidhu, the president of the Indian National Congress in Punjab, visited Dera Baba Nanak Shrine in Gurdaspur in the state and offered prayers for the reopening of the Kartarpur Corridor so that the devotees could visit the shrine.

The pilgrimage to Kartarpur Sahib gurdwara was suspended in March last year due to Covid-19 outbreak. Tuesday saw the second anniversary of the opening of the corridor, which connects the gurdwara in Pakistan to India.

November 9 marks the second anniversary of the opening of the Kartarpur corridor, which connects the gurdwara in Pakistan to India. It was inaugurated on November 9, 2019, to commemorate the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev.

In August, Pakistan lifted travel restrictions from 11 countries including India.

Pakistan put India under category C from May 22 till August 12 due to the spread of the Delta variant, which meant that the movement of people, including Sikh pilgrims, from India was subjected to special permission.

India and Pakistan signed the Kartarpur corridor agreement on October 24, 2019. Under it, Indian pilgrims of all faiths are allowed to undertake round-the-year visa-free travel through the corridor to Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib.
