INDIAN prime minister Narendra Modi on Friday (8) came up with a special gesture towards women on the occasion of the International Women’s Day by announcing a reduction of Rs 100 (£0.94) in prices of cooking gas cylinders.

He posted on X, formerly Twitter, in English and Hindi, “Today, on Women’s Day, our Government has decided to reduce LPG cylinder prices by ₹ 100. This will significantly ease the financial burden on millions of households across the country, especially benefiting our Nari Shakti.”

He added, “By making cooking gas more affordable, we also aim to support the well-being of families and ensure a healthier environment. This is in line with our commitment to empowering women and ensuring ‘Ease of Living’ for them.”

On the even of Women’s Day, the Modi government also announced extension of subsidy of Rs 300 (£2.83) a cylinder to poor women under the scheme of Ujjwala Yojana for the 2024-25 fiscal beginning on April 1. A 14 kilogram cooking-gas cylinder costs around Rs 900 (£8.50) in India’s capital Delhi.

Last October, the government raised the subsidy for 14-kg cylinders from Rs 200 (for upto 12 refills annually) to Rs 300 a cylinder. The subsidy was for the current fiscal, concluding on March 31.

Modi also greeted India’s women power on the occasion of the International Women’s Day in another post on X.

“We salute the strength, courage, and resilience of our Nari Shakti and laud their accomplishments across various fields. Our government is committed to empowering women through initiatives in education, entrepreneurship, agriculture, technology and more,” he said.

“This is also reflected in the government’s accomplishments in the last decade,” he added.

He also posted a video on the progress made by India’s women and girls with the caption in Hindi, “Now it’s your turn to fly
You are the daughter of India…”

PM Modi and his government have reiterated time and again the significance of women power and that efforts are being made for their emancipation. In September last year, the government cleared in a special session of the parliament a legislation in both chambers that called for 33 per cent reservation of seats for women in both the Lok Sabha or popularly elected Lower House of the parliament and the state legislative assemblies.

Recently, Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party released its first list of candidates for the upcoming general elections in which 28 were women.
