PAYAL KAPADIA’S film “All We Imagine as Light”, which won the Grand Prix at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, will be released in India this November.
The Malayalam-Hindi film will also serve as the opening feature for the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival on October 18. The film was previously released in select cinemas in Kerala on September 21 and opened in France on October 2.
The story revolves around two nurses, Prabha and Anu, from Kerala who live together in Mumbai. Starring Kani Kusruti and Divya Prabha, it is titled “Prabhayay Ninachathellam” in Malayalam.
Payal Kapadia shared her excitement for the upcoming release, saying, “I am thrilled for the film’s India release this November! I hope many people will come to watch it. It’s an incredible feeling for any filmmaker.”
The film is an India-France co-production between Chalk and Cheese Films, Another Birth, and petit chaos.
Spirit Media, owned by actor Rana Daggubati, has acquired the exclusive distribution rights for India. Daggubati commented, “Our partnership with this extraordinary film represents a step forward in our mission to bring compelling and moving stories from different parts of the country to audiences everywhere.”
Shivendra Singh Dungarpur, interim festival director for MAMI, highlighted that the film’s selection reflects the festival’s commitment to promoting such cinema.
He noted, “All We Imagine as Light” will always be remembered as a film that won the Grand Prix at Cannes, but it is also an independent production that overcame many challenges, particularly in securing funding, before it made its mark at Cannes and garnered acclaim worldwide.”
The MAMI Mumbai Film Festival will run from October 18 to 24, showcasing over 110 films in more than 50 languages.
