IN the latest addition to the series of incidents on board Air India flights that put the airline in the headlines for wrong reasons, a passenger was arrested for allegedly defecating, urinating and spitting on the floor during a flight from Mumbai to Delhi.
According to police, the incident happened on Saturday (24) on board flight AI 866.
The accused passenger, identified as Ram Singh, was seated at 17F. According to the case filed against him, he defecated, urinated and spat in row nine of the plane, India Today reported.
It was reported that the cabin crew issued a verbal warning to Singh and isolated him from others after his alleged came to their notice.
The flight’s pilot-in-command was also alerted and a request was sent to Air India for security assistance at the destination.
Other passengers on board the flight were agitated.
Air India’s security chief was present when the plane landed in Delhi to escort the accused passenger to the local police station. A case was lodged under sections of the Indian Penal Code dealing with obscene acts and public misconduct under the influence of alcohol.
Issuing an official statement later, Air India said it followed a zero-tolerance policy for such “unruly and unacceptable behaviour”.
“A passenger on our flight AI866 operating from Mumbai-Delhi on June 24 behaved in a repulsive manner, causing discomfort to the co-passengers. In doing their best to manage the situation in the circumstances, the crew immediately secluded the passenger for the rest of the flight and issued a warning. The passenger was handed over to the security personnel upon landing in Delhi,” a spokesperson of the airline said, India Today reported.
The incident revived the memories of a couple of similar incidents on international Air India flights last year. In November, a drunk man allegedly urinated on an elderly woman co-passenger while on flight between New York and Delhi.
In December, another inebriated man reportedly urinated on the blanket of a woman passenger on a flight between Paris and New Delhi.
