THE GOVERNMENT of Pakistan has stopped operations of small aircraft in areas that are threatened by the advancing Cyclone Biparjoy predicting an inclement weather amid the storm’s expected landfall on Thursday (15), Dawn reported.
Authorities are also considering suspending commercial flights and according to the report, the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) was set to take a decision on it on Thursday afternoon after reviewing the weather conditions.
Coastal regions of Pakistan and those in the adjacent western India have been put on high alert ahead of the cyclone with tens of thousands of people being evacuated a day ahead of the expected landfall.
Inam Haider Malik, chairman of Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority, shared a recent update on the cyclone in a joint media briefing in Islamabad with the country’s climate change minister, Sherry Rehman.
“After every two hours, cyclone-related information is shared with the institutions concerned. The movement of small aircraft is being stopped at Karachi airport. A decision will also be taken soon regarding commercial flights,” Malik said.
PIA spokesperson Abdullah H Khan on Wednesday (14) said that flight operations were continuing properly and the national carrier would review the weather on Thursday afternoon before making a decision, the Dawn report added.
He also said in a statement that PIA had completed its operational preparedness to avoid any untoward incident in view of the cyclone.
The airline has also activated its round-the-clock emergency response centre to monitor and take immediate actions for flight operations if weather conditions deteriorate.
In case of bad weather at Karachi and Sukkur airports, those in Multan and Lahore would be used as alternatives, it was reported.
